From the past to the present

At the start of the 20th century Styrsö also played an important role in the care of children with tuberculosis. Doctor Peter Silfverskiöld, a prominent physician and pioneer in the rehabilitation of patients with tuberculosis, saw the potential in the island’s clean sea air and lovely places for rest and recuperation. Under his leadership nursing homes and sanatoriums were established on the island, where children received nutritious food, rest and fresh air – factors that were then thought to be crucial in fighting the disease.

Silfverskiölds work was characterised by care and innovation, and many children got the chance to recuperate here at a time when medical treatments were limited. Styrsö’s role as a place for hope and healing is firmly etched in history, and Silfverskiöld’s efforts are still an important part of the island’s heritage.
